ADDIE and SAM and ACTION MAPPING, Oh MY!

I am a new instructional designer. I recently attended a certificate program that taught me to use the ADDIE model for Instructional Design. Now I am curious: How many Instructional Designers consistently apply one method of ID (whether it is voluntary or required) vs. how many people are blending different models according to their needs? Are you using ADDIE, SAM, Action Mapping, something else, or a blend?

Hi Amy,

For me as I have proceeded through my career, I don't find myself using one model specifically. They more so culminate together as pieces of my total "tool kit" as I have become more familiar and comfortable with the various methodologies. I see ADDIE referenced more and more in job postings and sometimes I think it has become more of a buzzword to use, especially by those outside of the L&D field who may not be familiar with other theories/methodologies. For me, the process of ADDIE is just more so a framework for how we approach most projects, not a documented or structured approach. From that high level process there are additional methodologies that can help expand what those processes look like in reality. I think it's great that you are getting additional education and urge you to check out other theories with the ID space. Happy to chat if you would like at any point!
